Fraser Brown

Fraser’s considerable experience in advising manufacturing and research enterprises enables him to deliver clear and targeted support on protecting and exploiting innovation, allowing his clients to make the best strategic and commercial decisions for their businesses.

Primarily based in Cleveland’s Reading office, Fraser and his team, Adrian Bradley and Nick Bennett, advise clients from a range of different industries, including polymer technology, electronic materials, green technologies, physical chemistry, mechanical engineering, pyrotechnics, nanotechnology and medical devices. Fraser also acts as European and UK patent counsel to certain major US companies and laboratories who benefit from his insight on European patent law and practice.

His extensive practical experience of advocacy in opposition and appeal hearings at the EPO gives him insights which are transferable upstream to patent drafting and prosecution work. This means that Fraser’s clients obtain robust and commercially useful patents which are not unduly vulnerable to expensive challenges.

Fraser works alongside his clients, frequently visiting them during product development to help identify patentable innovations. He particularly enjoys advising on product clearance and product or process design changes to avoid inadvertent infringement of third party patents.

The insight Fraser provides allows his clients to focus their energies on developing their businesses, secure in the knowledge that their IP strategies are being carefully overseen.

Fraser’s professional affiliations extend beyond the legal world and include several respected bodies:

  • Institution of Engineering & Technology
  • Institute of Nanotechnology
  • Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining

These affiliations, and Fraser’s prior experience of working in industry and research at the Central Electricity Generating Board and Oxford University, ensure that he is able to understand his clients’ objectives and give commercially relevant advice from an insider’s point of view.

Fraser enjoys working with like-minded overseas attorneys, extending the benefits of his expertise to their clients, to ensure they are properly protected in Europe. Fraser's specialist knowledge of the nuances of European Patent Convention law and practice is invaluable to all our overseas attorneys.

Fraser Brown – energising ideas for Cleveland clients since 1993.
